Backyard Burning

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation call 1 (800) 663-5555 or *5555 on a cell phone.

Anyone found in contravention of an open-burning prohibition may be issued a fine for $1,150, may be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

Open air burning is not permitted in the District of Sechelt.

Burning of garden waste is not permitted in the District of Sechelt.

Residential Green Waste can be dropped off, no charge, to Salish Soils located at 5800 Black Bear Road, Sechelt, BC. They accept residential self-haul loads weighing less than 5 tonnes.

As long as a campfire ban is NOT in effect in Sechelt or the Coastal Fire Centre area, a campfire is allowed within the District and is defined as a fire:
  • That burns clean
  • Uses dry wood only
  • Does not exceed one metre in diameter and one metre in height
  • Is contained within a fire pit or approved incinerator
  • Does not create a smoke or spark nuisance to neighbouring properties
  • Does not contravene any Federal, Provincial or Fire Department open air burning regulations
  • Must be clear of overhanging foliage, have access to a water hose and be tended by someone 18 years of age or older.

For more information on regulations see the Sechelt Fire Department and the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forests.

Check for updates on the current campfire status map for the Coastal Fire Centre area.
