Climate Action

Global climate change and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have reached crisis levels. Human activities related to burning of fossil fuels and changes to the land, water and air have cumulatively surpassed nature’s ability to act as a buffer.

The global climate emergency demands action at all levels of government and poses growing local risks, with implications for drinking water reliability, stormwater and flood management, sea level rise, wildfire, and increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events.

The District recognizes that we need to take action on global climate change. We need to:

  1. Reduce green house gas (GHG) emissions;
  2. Prepare our community to respond and adapt to a new future.

Climate Actions

A variety of municipal plans and studies guide our climate action work, covering topics such as economic, environmental and social/cultural sustainability, complete communities, active transportation, urban forest management, coastal flooding, stormwater and water conservation goals, and development/building standards.

The District also collaborates with neighbouring and senior governments to share, learn and implement effective regional solutions.

Get Involved!

Add to the Tree of Hope in a fun interactive activity. Simply add your leaf to the tree to tell others (and yourself) what you are committed to doing.

Whether you can reduce the use of fossil fuels, reduce waste, help others, love nature, take only what you need, these are all things that help our community and the Earth. See what others are doing, and commit to a change you can make.

Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change

Greenhouse gases trap heat and increase the atmosphere’s temperature. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most common greenhouse gas.

Here in Sechelt, the main ways we can lower GHG emissions is by

  • burning less fossil fuels to power vehicles

  • using less energy to heat and cool buildings and homes

  • producing less waste
