Tax Deferment

Property tax deferment does NOT cover any utility fees such as Garbage Utility and Sewer Utility that are listed on your tax notice, as well as your Water Utility bill through the Sunshine Coast Regional District. Any unpaid utilities will disqualify a property in participating in the property tax deferment program.

Property tax deferment applications must be submitted through the Province of BC and are not managed by the District of Sechelt.

When you’re approved for the property tax deferment program, the Ministry of Finance pays your property taxes on your behalf after the tax due date and places a restrictive lien on your property. This means you’re limited in the types of changes you can make to your property title while you’re in the tax deferment program. Ensure you complete any necessary changes to your property title before you submit your application.

Compound interest is charged on the deferred tax amount starting from the date your property taxes are due or the date you applied to defer, whichever is later. Find out how interest is applied to your tax deferment loan

Residential property owners can apply for property tax deferment on their principal residence online, quickly, and easily. To learn more about eligibility, required supporting documents, or application status please visit the Province website.

Property owners needing help to understand the requirements and eligibility of the program can contact government agents by phoning 1 888 355 2700 (within Canada) or 250 387 0555 (outside of Canada).

The District of Sechelt cannot provide the amount owed on the loan owed to the province. Please enquire with Service BC for your statement.
